“I’m not trying to do the glossy white; you know: the soft pastel. It’s a little edgier, a little sexier.”
Hannah Boulier isn’t your typical florist.
The founder of Living Nature Floral, she studied psychology, specifically depth psychology, a Jungian field that zeroes in on the unconscious mind, aka the shadow self.
This background is evident in her botanical brand: The name Living Nature even comes from Carl Jung’s quote: “Meaning and purposefulness are not the prerogatives of the mind; they operate in the whole of living nature. There is no difference in principle between organic and psychic growth. As a plant produces its flower, so the psyche creates its symbols.”
Some of Boulier’s favorite flowers are amaranth, which symbolizes unwithering strength; Japanese anemone, known as the “broken bowl flower” that wards off evil; and poppies, which can mean peace. The effect is a gothic abundance, as if Beetlejuice teen Lydia Dietz became a florist.
As singular as her vision is, this is new territory to Boulier. Living Nature is only about two- years-old, and her experience in the florist game is working at flower farms and collaborating with like-minded designers. And, yes, it is all terrifying: “There is this imposter syndrome, but I move towards that; I want that. Vulnerability fuels my work.”
Boulier is now expanding the Living Nature brand with workshops focused on meditation, growth, and self-healing – programs where participants can surface, identify, and purge negativity. “We’re going to design in this really organic way that’s not about traditional floral design, but about what’s resonating for you at that moment.”
But Boulier is clear: she wants to grow smart, rather than fast. “I’m trying to build something long-term and that matters to me without selling out or cutting corners. That requires a lot of self-respect and honoring where I’m at.”
We look forward to seeing all that blooms.
